How to Schedule a Post to Publish in the Past or in the Future

| February 17, 2011 | 2 Comments

Excerpted from “Does This Blogsite Make My Wallet Look Fat?”

So, you’re going on vacation and you want to keep you blogsite fans busy while you’re gone. Why not write some posts ahead of time and tell WordPress when to publish them on your blog? When you do this, WordPress will not publish or display your blog post until the time and day you choose for that post.

How to control the date and time your post will be published:

NOTE: Be sure to choose these settings before you press “Publish” on your post.

  1. Log into your WordPress account (www.OurWebsite.com/wp-login.php).
  2. Click “Posts” in the menu bar.
  3. Click “Add New” in the sub-menu.
  4. On the right-hand side of the “Add New Post” page you will see “Publish.”
  5. Click “Edit” beside “Publish immediately.”
  6. Choose the date and time you’d like the post to appear in the future.
  7. Press “Publish” to complete the scheduling process.

How to Avoid Being Sleazy and Make the Mistakes Desperate Entrepreneurs Make on Social Networking Sites

| November 28, 2010 | 0 Comments

If you have been turned off by someone on Twitter, Facebook etc chances are they were either sleazy or their desperation rubbed you the wrong way. But how do you avoid being and acting the same way? Here are a few tips for you.

Salesy – Avoid being salesy by creating a mix of content using the V.C.E.P.P.F. model (Value, Community, Engagement, Promotion, Personality, Fun)

Arrogant – Don’t just talk about yourself. Tweet/talk about others and promote their  content and/or business.

Sandwich – Tweet valuable information.”I am eating a sandwich” only tells your followers that you are typing with your mouth full!

Talking to Yourself - Engage and communicate with others. Have a conversation and therefor avoid looking like you are only talking to yourself.

UnPromotions – When you promote your business, remember to add the URL! You wouldn’t believe how many promotional tweets/status updates that leave out the URL. Don’t make your potential clients/consumers search for whatever you are promoting. Don’t make them do the work.

Annoying my Facebook – Be kind to your Facebook Fans & Friends Inboxes, don’t fill them with invitations, suggestions etc. It’s not effective.

“Allow myself to introduce myself” – Avoid auto DMs. These are the direct messages you get in your Twitter inbox from someone you just begun following. If I am following you on Twitter, I have already checked our your profile and your website. To send me an email asking me to repeat that process is redundant.

Do you have any others you want to add to the list? Add it below.

Don’t Forget That Blog Post Idea

| November 7, 2010 | 15 Comments

My goal is to write a blog post 5 – 7 times a week (that doesn’t mean I will write everyday, you can breathe now!). When I aim to blog almost everyday I tend to generate new ideas for a blog posts easily. You see, when blogging is on your mind everyday you will go through your day thinking about what to blog about next. Ideas will come naturally to you. Clients and potential clients will give you ideas through conversations, questions, tweets and emails. Events in your life, commercials you see, books you read, workshops you attend etc will spark the creative bug in you.

Now that you have generated ideas for your upcoming blog posts what do you do with them? Many people feel like they “have to” write the blog post right away. Others rely on memory to remind them of all their ideas when they are ready to write. Well, you don’t have to write your posts right away and if you rely on your memory you are setting yourself up for disappointment (your brain has enough to think about!).

Instead develop the habit of gathering your blog post ideas in your WordPress account. I like to stay logged into WordPress all day. When I get an idea for a blog post I create a new post, quickly enter the idea in the title field then click “save draft”. I then go back to whatever it was I was doing when the idea came to mind.

When the time comes to write a blog post I can view all of my draft posts, scan the titles and complete the one that stands out the most.

Do you like this idea? How soon will you start implementing it? Let me know below.

How to Customize the Subject of Your Feedburner Emails

| November 5, 2010 | 3 Comments

“What settings do I need to change so my Feedburner emails show the latest blog post title in the subject of the email, instead of the old tagline of my site?”

This question came in from a good friend and fellow coach Tia Singh.

If you are using Feedburner to deliver your blog posts via email you may have noticed that the subject line never changes. You can change the settings in Feedburner to display the name of the blog post it is delivering in the subject line instead of the name of your site, the name of your feed or the tag line of your WordPress blogsite. Here’s how to do it!

How to Customize the Subject of Your Feedburner Emails

  1. Log into Feedburner: http://feedburner.google.com
  2. Choose the feed you want to customize under “Feed Title”
  3. Click the “Publicize” tab across the top
  4. Click “Email Subscriptions” on the left menu bar
  5. Click “Email Branding” in the sub-menu
  6. Input the following in the “Email/Subject title:” field
    ${latestItemTitle}
This will pick up the title of your blog post and input it in the subject field for you automatically.
  7. In case you write more than one blog post a day click “Change Subject when an email has 2 or more items”
  8. A new field will appear and so will a few examples for you to copy and paste into that field. I choose “${latestItemTitle}” plus ${m} more
This will display the title of the most recent blog post and “plus 1 more” in the case that I wrote 2 blog posts that day!
  9. Scroll down (all the way down) and click “Save”

How Do You Encourage Visitors To Leave Comments

| November 1, 2010 | 5 Comments

If you have visited my blog lately, you would have noticed a “suggestion box” on the bottom right hand corner that asks “What should we write about next?” A few of you suggested that I write about “how to encourage visitors to leave comments”. So here it is…

Many bloggers make the mistake of writing a blog post thinking that good content will encourage readers to interact with each other and the blogger via comments. They get frustrated, confused and start hating their blog. Yikes, we don’t want that!

The number one way to encourage visitors to leave a comment is to ask them a question at the end of your post. Psychologically it is difficult to be asked a question and not answer it! :) Where else would they answer it but in the comments section? Put a question at the bottom of your posts like “What do you think?”, “What one action will you take now that you have learned the 3 steps to building your blog?”, “Have you tried this or are you going to?” or “Tell use about your experience using blah-blah”.

Now that you have asked your question ask your self this question: Is it easy for your readers to know where to comment? If  not talk to your blog manager to rearrange or reprogram your comment box or tell people how they can comment. “Scroll down to the end of this post and leave your comment in the comment form below, then press submit”. It seems obvious to some how to post a comment but it’s not obvious to everyone. Keep in mind your visitors’ skill levels will vary and you don’t want to make some people feel left out.

If you really want to generate a hot conversation on your blog, think “controversy”. Either mention a controversial topic in your blog and ask people for their opinion on that controversial topic. You can also be controversial on your blog by going against the norm on a hot topic. This strategy always gets people passing around your blog address like a virus, so you will be generating a lot of traffic as well. Being controversial doesn’t mean being rude or inconsiderate of others.

Now that you know how to encourage visitors to leave comments on your blog, what action step will you take? Leave your reply in our comment box.

How WordPress Can Make You Look Super Cool and Brilliant!

| October 30, 2010 | 0 Comments

There’s always a non-believer in the crowd. When I talk to groups about WordPress and how versatile it is, there’s always one person who asks “Besides using WordPress as a blog + website, what else can you use it for?” I have a long list of answers to this question however one of my favourite answers (because it gets the “OH WOW!” response that I love so much) is to inform them about “digital business cards”. It sounds kinda boring at first but it’s super cool, trust me.
A digital business card is a site (such as www.yournamehere.com) that contains your contact information of course, just like a regular business card. However the digital business card can be updated at any time even after you just printed 500 business cards! That’s pretty cool, but there’s more.

On your digital business card site you can also show off your social media profiles!

Finally one place to send clients, potential clients and potential fans to. If you really want to leverage your cool digital business card, why not tweet the address to your twitter followers so that they can follow you on your other social media networking sites? But don’t stop there. You have all those other social media sites to promote your new site to!

Would you like a site like this created for you? We are offering this service for $397, that’s $100 off our regular price, until January 10th 2011.

We do expect high demand for this super cool offer however if you purchase this package before Friday December 10th your site is guaranteed to be ready before 2011 arrives!
Read more about this service or purchase this package now.

What is a WordPress Blogsite?

| October 28, 2010 | 1 Comment

Need a blog or a new website? How about a blogsite? A blogsite is a blog with all the features of a website. This means you can add new posts, articles, tips just as you would with a blog and you can have static pages and a menu bar like other websites. (This website is a blogsite.)

Traditional websites can be troublesome for those of us who like to update our content often. If you are constantly adding new teleclasses, speaking dates and other offers you know how much this can cost you to make changes to your site. Traditional websites are not pleasant to update and so we end up leaving them as they are. Did you know that search engines like Google and Yahoo like websites that are updated with fresh content often? This is how they know that your site is active and not growing cobwebs on it! Blogs are updated quite often (because it’s easy to do so) and this is why search engines love blogs or blogsites.

The greatest blogsite software out there (in my humble opinion) is WordPress. There are many advantages to WordPress blogsites over traditional websites. Blogsites are:

  • easy to update or add content
  • search engines like Google and Yahoo love them
  • you can update them from any computer (mac or pc) with internet access
  • you can add posts or articles to them quite easily
  • you can delete any post or page whenever you like (you know in case you make a mistake or change your mind)
  • you can password protect pages or posts
  • you can add accessories (known as ‘plugins’) to spice up your blog such as polls, ‘email to a friend’, statistics, site maps, and many more
  • WordPress is free to use
  • WordPress offers 1000’s of free blogsite designs (known as ‘themes’) and many more unique themes for a small fee

How to Survive a Blog Detox

| October 10, 2010 | 0 Comments

On average every website owner begins to dislike their site two or three years after they make it live. Why? Because online trends change, their own tastes change or their client’s needs change.

I am not immune to this phenomenon. I knew it was time for a change when I was embarrassed to send potential clients to my WPBlogsites.com site. I found the navigation to be overwhelming, the home page was too busy and I never did get around to creating a logo or banner! I’m always working on client’s sites that I never had time to create my own!

When preparing for your blog detox you have two choices:
